Abrasions are injuries to the uppermost layer of skin known as the epidermis. Children often get them on their knees when playing.

Cuts and bruises usually have a little bleeding, and most heal without a scar. The skin will often appear red or pink with pain and a burning sensation.

Abrasions happen when the skin comes into direct contact with a rough surface. The surface will scrape, scratch or cut the upper layer of the skin. They are caused by accidents, like falling off a bicycle or taking a misstep. They can be caused by playing sports or with a pet, or from trauma of some kind.

Consult your physician if an abrasion won't stop bleeding or swells. If, after a few days, heat increases around the injury and you notice pus forming, it is infected and it needs to be treated as soon as possible.
